Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau is the vibrant capital of the Bahamas, known for its beautiful beaches, rich history, and numerous attractions. Visitors can enjoy the local culture, relax on stunning shores, and explore an array of shops and restaurants.

Location & Transportation

Prince George Wharf is situated in the heart of Nassau, just near Rawson Square. With three long piers boasting six berths, this is where your cruise adventure begins. On disembarking, you’ll step into the colorful Festival Place Welcome Center – designed to resemble a traditional Bahamian village – where local vendors offer handmade arts, crafts, and island treats like coconut and pineapple tarts. I love stopping here to absorb the cheerful scenery and taste a little local flavor.

The area comes alive with live Bahamian music on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Downtown is only a leisurely 15-minute stroll away, making it easy to explore on foot. There’s also a tour desk to help cruise passengers get more details about islands and available excursions.

Sightseeing

Nassau offers a wonderful mix of history, culture, and vibrant nightlife. I’ve enjoyed wandering the charming streets and discovering hidden gems like:

  • The lively casino spots, cabaret shows, and magic or acrobatic acts that light up the evenings.
  • Historical sites such as Fort Charlotte, which dates back to 1788, complete with a moat and battlements.
  • Bay Street, famous for its international shopping and lined with pastel pink Colonial-style government buildings, including the Houses of Parliament and the old Colonial Secretary's Office.
  • Parliament Square, the traditional center of Bahamian government, where seasonal ceremonies and events add a festive spirit.
  • A variety of walking tours (check out the walking tour of Nassau) that allow you to explore the city’s rich colonial history and vibrant street life.

Tours & Excursions

There are plenty of ways to experience Nassau and its nearby attractions. Whether you’re looking for a quick ride or a full-day adventure, here are some options I’ve found fun and affordable:

  • Walking Tours: Stroll through the historic core of Nassau, which spans about twelve blocks long and six blocks deep.
  • Taxis: Look for vehicles displaying the "Bahamahost" sticker. They’re reliable, with fares typically at $9 plus a $2 bridge toll between downtown Nassau and Paradise Island. Just remember that tips of around 15% are customary.
  • Nassau Water Taxi: Departs every 30 minutes from behind the Straw Market and heads to Paradise Island. It operates daily between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. for $8 a round-trip. Even though the trip takes about 10 minutes, be aware that departures can sometimes run a tad behind schedule.
  • Bike and Scooter Rentals: For a breezy island adventure, rent a bike or a motor scooter. Scooter rentals generally cost between US$25 to US$35 per day.
  • Paradise Island Excursion: Head east on Bay Street and cross the bridge to reach Paradise Island. You can choose a taxi (around $6 per person each way) or a ferry ($4 each way, or $8 round-trip) to explore luxury resorts like the famous Atlantis Bahamas Resort, the Caribbean’s largest casino, and enjoy vibrant nightlife.
  • Day Trips to Nearby Islands:
    • Pearl Island: A short trip about eight miles from Nassau offers crystal-clear waters, pristine white-sand beaches, and the island’s iconic lighthouse.
    • Blue Lagoon Island: Known also as Salt Cay, this island is home to Dolphin Encounters, sea lions, and scenic natural beauty with a hidden turquoise lagoon and acres of coconut palms.

Shopping

Nassau is a shopaholic’s haven. Bay Street is famous for its duty-free bargains and a wide variety of international as well as locally made products. I love wandering the vibrant corridors of the Straw Market where you can haggle for:

  • Handmade baskets, hats, and wood carvings
  • Unique jewelry, including fine pieces and Rolex watches
  • Local crafts such as batik fabrics and other native goods

The colonial buildings that frame Bay Street add to the charm and make browsing a delightful experience.

Dining

The culinary scene in Nassau is a delicious blend of local tradition and international flavors. When you’re here, don’t miss the chance to try classic Bahamian dishes like:

  • Conch fritters and grouper fingers
  • Peas 'n' rice and boiled fish paired with johnnycake
  • Guava duff for dessert

Each bite pairs perfectly with a refreshing tropical drink. There are plenty of local restaurants and beachside cafés where you can sample these dishes, immersing yourself in the island’s warm hospitality.

Culture & Local Events

Nassau’s culture is as colorful as its history, and the island buzzes with local events that capture the Bahamian spirit.

Local Events

  • The Festival Place Welcome Center often hosts live Bahamian music on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays – a perfect way to experience the island’s rhythmic vibe.
  • In downtown Nassau, Parliament Square is not just the political heart of the city but also a venue for seasonal ceremonies and pageantry during the Opening Ceremonies of the Supreme Court.

Culture & Practical Information

  • The local currency is the Bahamian dollar (B$), which is on par with the US dollar. Both are widely accepted throughout the country.
  • English is the main language spoken, making it easy for visitors to communicate.
  • Most Bahamian stores remain closed on Sundays, so it’s best to plan your shopping and visits for Monday through Saturday, preferably in the morning when it’s cooler and less crowded.
  • As with any busy tourist spot, be mindful of your belongings as pickpockets can be common in crowded areas.

Safety & Awareness

  • Always keep an eye on your valuables, especially in busy markets and tourist hotspots.
  • Should you need help, local emergency services can be reached by dialing 911.
